Limbo Could Have Been On PSN First

Sony could have had Limbo as a timed PSN exclusive had the platform-holder not wanted to retain the rights to the IP, SCE has revealed. Talking at the Develop Conference in Brighton last week, Sony Computer Entertainment Executive Producer Pete Smith admitted that talks had been held with Limbo dev Playdead about releasing the game exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

Negotiations for PSN exclusivity failed when Sony insisted on keeping hold of the IP rights to Limbo, which went on to sell over a million copies, releasing first on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. Limbo achieved 300,000 downloads on XBLA in its first month alone. The game also sold well on PSN when it released in 2011, but it could have potentially performed better had it released on the platform first.

"There are obvious benefits to keeping it, but also to giving it up: you're way more likely to get the deal," Smith explained with regards to IP rights. "Remember: 100 per cent of nothing is nothing. A publisher is much more likely to commit to marketing and merchandising if they own the IP."

So what, the timed exclusive on Xbox was only because Playdead was butthurt by Sony?

@#3 - No it's because Microsoft allowed Playdead to keep the rights to their game. Probably gave them more money to release it as an exclusive on the 360 first.

Can't blame Playdead here. One company wants to take the property in order to publish the game, other lets you keep it. Which choice would you ake?

Fuck you Smith. Playdead was right not to surrender their IP. Especially to Sony who barely advertises any games they publish, regardless of if they own the IP or not. The only way Sony will advertise your game properly is it's called Uncharted.

@#5 - Plus, don't you think the only reason Sony wanted the IP was because they thought they had something of value? Lots of games get released on both platforms without issue.

Sounds like Sony thought this was going to be a hit, and got greedy. Microsoft then offered a sweeter deal, and got the exclusive.

Sounds like Sony ended up getting butthurt :)

Hmmm... interesting, this must be one of the principal reasons of why we don't see much indie games on PSN....

I know this is "bussiness", but this way how is implement sounds like an "extortion" (or blackmail) for me, i think that Sony must change their mind in this decisions and just leave the indies developers in publish their games normally (like: if is multi-plattform = good, if is timed exclusive for the PS3 = better)

It's always a shame when stuff like this gets in the way of games reaching certain consoles. At least PS3 finally got it.

Lol and it goes on and on and on. I love Playstation but Sony really needs to give Playstation (or at least PSN) more attention then they do and they need to stop treating Small companies or Indie Dev's like they own them this way... PSN would be more like Steam and even Xbox Live with downloadable content if they did and PSN would thrive a bit more for it.

Oh well... Maybe the PS4 will pan out better then the PS3 did, learn from your mistakes Sony ... For the love of god lol.

They had every right to keep it, its about time small devs kept what they create and not give up to the big corps like Sony, remember years ago there was loads of devs now there's hardly no one thanks to the like of MICROSOFT, SONY, ACTIVISION, EA all the small devs that made great games from my childhood have gone and the big fish swallowed them up chewed them to pieces and killed them off one by one.

Just because Sony wanted the rights to it isnt a bad thing, they just needed to know when to stop pushing, just look at the groups they have been helping over all, like thatgamecompany with the help of sony made some amazingly breathtaking games, and then plastic with Datura another great and very unique game.

Oh and people who say that sony doesnt pay attention to the psn, remember they have been putting out a good amount of games for it of late and still are making some.
