Shenmue 3 Sales Were "Fine", Struggled as a Mass Market Product
Written Wednesday, February 19, 2020 By Matt Lorrigan

During an earnings presentation for Deep Silver's parent company Embracer Group, Shenmue III's financial performance was described as "fine".

Embracer Group's CEO Lard Wingefors said, "Shenmue 3 is an IP and a product I love and, you know, I think financially it’s fine and I’m glad that the core fans are pleased.

“However, I think it’s a challenge to see this as a mass market product. This is a core niche product and I think that’s the comment I’d like to do on that game.”

Shenmue III was famously funded by fans on Kickstarter, with many of the backing tiers offering a free copy of the final game to fans, which would not contribute to sales. It seems that beyond those who backed the long-awaited sequel, there wasn't huge demand for the game. Series creator Yu Suzuki has hinted that he does want to make a Shenmue 4 - we'll have to wait and see how Shenmue 3 sales affect this process.

Shenmue 3 is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC.

This surprises no one. Only fans of the first 2 would be interested in a game that looks like it is 15-20 years old. Not complaining as I can't wait to play it but he is right that it could never be a big market game.

The Epic Game Store backlash certainly hurt it too.

Most people who wanted to play it already were backers, who pulled pledges (like myself). Since the EGS isn't anything like Steam where you happen to have it open and browse the store to stumble across a game, it missed out on those sales too.

But at least Deep Silver got millions from Epic for it.
