Sonic the Hedgehog Speeds Past Detective Pikachu As Biggest Video Game Film Opening
Written Monday, February 17, 2020 By Matt Lorrigan

Sonic the Hedgehog's high opening weekend box-office numbers are the highest ever for a video game movie adaptation, narrowly overtaking the previous record holder Detective Pikachu.

The film's three-day opening of $57 million in the US, against Detective Pikachu's $54.3 million in 2019. Sonic also brought in $43 mill from the non-American global markets, bringing the three-day global figure to approximately $111 million.

This is good news for Paramount, with the film's budget reported to be around $90 million, and shows that Sonic still has a worldwide appeal, despite the slightly dwindling quality of the blue blur's games (Sonic Mania excluded, of course). Infamously, the film could have looked very different, with the hedgehog's original design changed after negative reception to the first trailer. We'll never know how Sonic the Hedgehog would have performed with that nightmare-inducing design, but I'll take a guess and say - worse.

Sonic Mania is currently on sale on the PlayStation Store.
