Obsidian Entertainment's sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds has sold more than 2 million copies since its launch in October 2019, parent company Take-Two Interactive has confirmed during an earnings call. Whether or not this includes downloads via Xbox Game Pass is unknown, but presumably 'sales' would suggest actual copies sold.

Upon release, The Outer Worlds was available as part of a subscription to Game Pass on Xbox One, thanks to Microsoft's purchase of Obsidian in November 2018. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick noted that support for services like PlayStation Now and Game Pass is an ongoing consideration at the company.

Generally, Zelnick states that subscription services like these are more suitable for older titles in order to grant them a second bite of the cherry. As an example, Grand Theft Auto V has sold 120 million copies, and since it was temporarily added to PS Now and subsequently released to Game Pass, even more players will get to play it.

"We think subscription offerings are probably better suited to catalogue but we're willing to take experimental chances when it makes sense," said Zelnick during T2's earning's call (via GameSpot). "It's early days for all these platforms."

The Outer Worlds is said to be an "enduring franchise" for Microsoft, but rather than Take-Two's Private Division label on publishing duties, any sequels would be released under the Microsoft umbrella. Check out our The Outer Worlds review here.
