The Last of Us: Part II
Each The Last of Us Part 2 Enemy Will Have a Unique Name, Won't Be a 'Braindead Obstacle'

The more Naughty Dog reveals about The Last of Us Part II, the more it seems the developer is pulling out all of the stops to deliver something that eclipses the first game in every department. Ellie and her enemies will have individual heartbeats that the game will track, as well as their own unique name, for instance, and killing them will be deliberately, disturbingly violent.

"We want to treat violence as realistically as we can in an action game,” said Neil Druckmann in a chat on the PS Blog. "One example is that every human enemy in the game features a unique name, such as Omar, or Joe. [This was] a big effort that required not only new tech, but a lot of recording investment... The way they communicate is much more sophisticated. We do that in order to make you feel it’s not just like an NPC or braindead obstacle."

Should you kill an enemy (and you will), their allies may also scream out their name in grief, altering their emotions, enraging them and making them more unpredictable in combat. "Your thoughts are provoked in really interesting ways in the way some of the best stories are done," Druckmann added. "That’s what we’re striving for."

The Last of Us Part II won't be a complete bloodbath, however, and there will be sections where you can avoid confrontation altogether. "We wanted to have whole sequences that you can be spotted, engage in some combat, and escape without clearing the area," Druckmann stated.

"Likewise, we wanted to have way more sequences where you could ghost completely. It’s very challenging and very hard, but it’s possible to leave areas. Then there are certain situations where we want you engaged, we want you to partake in certain actions that are going to make you uncomfortable. But that’s part of the narrative, that’s part of Ellie’s journey."

With different types of encounters during Ellie's journey, you can also expect The Last of Us Part II to take a leaf out of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy's book, with some wider areas to explore, according to Druckmann. "We’re going to do that with this game, and find ways to use that to mirror the story," he said. "When we want tension to drop, and we want you to think 'What do I do next? What do I want to explore here?' We have that."

The Last of Us Part II launches for PlayStation 4 on 21st February 2020, and you can get details on the Special, Collector's, and Ellie Editions of the game, as well as the Digital Deluxe Edition here.

I bet there will be a trophy about killing an npc with Ellie's name or even two with Joel's name.

@#4 Just because you're too blind to see it, doesn't mean that there isn't one.

Knowing someone's name means nothing. Now, knowing how much of an asshole they are, only makes one want to kill them all the more...

It's pretty amazing, if you've seen the demo, after Ellie killed someone, another npc yelled his name rushing towards him.

Wouldn't be surprise if there isn't a single clone either, with every NPC being modelled individually.

This game will be freaking awesome
