God of War (2018)
God of War 2 Job Listings Suggest Sony is Gearing Up For a PS5 Sequel

While a sequel to 2018's God of War is assured, you might be keen to learn that Sony Santa Monica is staffing up for the next chapter in Kratos' ongoing odyssey, which appears to be coming to PlayStation 5. Obvious news is obvious perhaps, but anything that points to more God of War can only be considered a good thing.

Several job listings have cropped up on Sony Santa Monica's careers website (via GamesRadar), confirming that the God of War developer is staffing up for an array of different key roles, including one for Senior Combat Designer, demanding that applicants "have knowledge of God of War (2018) and be able to speak in depth about the combat systems, mechanics and enemies."

Another for Facial Blend Shape Character Artist wants "next-gen video game platform experience," while a Systems Designer role is also looking for a candidate with "expertise in action games or action RPGs" for the next God of War game, purported to be God of War: Ragnarok, rather than plain old God of War 2.

Clearly, a new God of War is happening, then, but evidently it won't be for a long while yet. And to reiterate, it'll presumably be launching for PS5. Exciting stuff. Check out our review of last year's superlative God of War here.

Why can't they do like the first God of War II and make it a swan song for the PS4, the last big exclusive and really push the console to its max? Then more people could experience it right off the bat and truly appreciate the power of the PS4. GOW II was better than most launch PS3 games in graphics, game play, story and everything else.

While I agree with #2 I feel like ghost of tsushima will be the last big exclusive that pushes the PS4 to its limits, especially from what little we've seen. Either that or it will be a launch title for the PS5 just like sucker punches last game

I think it all depends how far along in development they are and the anticipated publish date. If they are hiring for this now in 2019, we are probably 2-3 years out.

Recall that Sony press conference on the PS5 from May 2019. See slide 6 specifically:

If you don't have time to look, they specifically say that the PS4 will be the "engine of engagement and profitability for the next 3 years."

That said, if the GOW sequel is set to launch PRIOR to 2022 (the "expiration year" for the PS4 per the slide above), I think they very well may release the game on both PS4 and PS5.

If not or if it is even 2H21, I think they will make it PS5 exclusive to encourage the bulk of the remainder of the PS4 user base to transition to the new platform - but BEFORE they launch a slim or reduce price version ...

@1 god of war has already pushed ps4 to the brink. My ps4 pro sounds like a jet engine while playing god of war and horizon zero dawn. I almost had to put on headphones.

One of the the defining games of the PS4 generation. Can't wait to see what they have in store for the PS5.

Why don't they call it God of War 6. It's so annoying "I am going to play God of War 2" which one. We have numbers to differentiate the sequels. At least make a subtitle like God of War Norse 2.

@9 It is confusing. Almost as much as Xbox (original) vs Xbox One.

@6 Read the first post again, genius. It's okay if it takes you a couple tries for you to understand what they meant.

No real reason to make GOW the final hurrah when we already have Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2 doing that...

Considering they spoke quite a lot about budget and manpower constraints for GOW and still produced such a masterpiece, I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do with more power, money, and hands.
