Borderlands 3 Interview: "No Other Looter Shooter Hits the Same Irreverence and Humour"

Since exploding onto the scene back in 2009, Borderlands has carved itself a niche in a crowded genre of shooters, thanks to its unique art style and trademark unhinged, offbeat comical bits. All of that is back in abundance for Borderlands 3, you'll (probably) be happy to know.

According to Creative Director Paul Sage, no other looter shooter quite manages to deliver the level of irreverence and humour that Borderlands does, and looking back at the Borderlands 1 and 2, The Pre-Sequel, and Tales From the Borderlands, it's hard to disagree with him. It's certainly funnier than The Division.

During the reveal event in Los Angeles, we had a chat with Sage about all things Borderlands 3, finding out more about the series' unique selling point, and so much more. You can check out the full interview below, and give our hands-on impressions a read (with Amara gameplay) here.

Borderlands 3 is out on 13th September for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You'll also find gameplay featuring new Operative Vault Hunter Zane here.

Irreverent? Give me a effing break.

If they were "irreverent" they'd be making fun of Lilith in Borderlands 2, with characters calling her a coal-burner, and featuring her a struggling single mom suing Roland who is nowhere to be found and supposedly pursuing a budding rap career offworld. That would be edgy AF.

If they were "irreverent," Hammerlock would have the HIV and be trolling the Pandora Grindr looking for a bug hunter to pass the virus on, ultimately finding a midget named Kenboy, in a veiled nod to the documentary "The Gift." Oh yeah, we can't say "midget" any more -- case in point. So irreverent!

If they were "irreverent," they wouldn't be lionizing every single lionized SJW / LGBT archetype and bending the knee to every aggrieved group with straight-faced seriousness. They'd poke fun at them, because they are ridiculous. That is what irreverence is. Not some stupid pelvic thrusting robot.

P.S. If you want to see "irreverent," check out "Conker's Bad Fur Day" from almost 20 years ago.

THAT was irreverent.

Not really a fan of the "humour" in the Borderlands series. It comes off as immature.

I can't wait for Tiny Tina, Mad Moxxi and Mr. Torgue to be shown off properly, because they are by far the funniest characters in the entire series :). We got a taste of Claptrap during the gameplay reveal and his writing is as sharp as ever, thus I can't wait to see how he manages to top his now infamous meltdown from Borderlands 2 :).

Can't wait!

The last best looter shooter was Borderlands 2 and undoubtedly the best will be Borderlands 3.

I'm sure there'll be a joke in the full game that'll trigger some group on the internet.

Looking forward to it

Always loved that the series never takes itself too seriously.

I don't understand why other companies don't make fun looter shooters? Instead they nerf, ban people for playing, ban them for loot, etc.

Borderlands 2 drove me away from the series, with it's childish humour etc.
Making fun of fatties and southerners, reaaaally cutting edge lol.
This, like the presequel, will be a very hard pass.

Also, this article isn't news - it's propagander. How much was PST paid for this fluff piece I wonder? Pathetic, at any rate.

@dreadnaught_ Not one single thing you said was the least bit creative, original, and most importantly, funny in the least. Weak stuff my friend. I seriously hope you’re not trying to make a living at this shit.
