Actual Sunlight is coming to PS Vita in Europe / PAL territories on 7th October, developer Will O’Neill has revealed on the EU PS Blog. But what the hell is Actual Sunlight? Let me tell you.

Already out in the US on PS Vita and released on PC in 2013, Actual Sunlight is a short, story-driven game about depression that combines an old-school, top down aesthetic with detailed CG animated cutscenes. I’ll let O’Neill explain the rest, courtesy of the PS Blog.

“In Actual Sunlight, you step into the shoes of Evan Winter, a depressed and overweight 30-something professional in Toronto,” said O’Neill. “The game offers an internal perspective on his life which is often difficult and sad, but also engaging and darkly humourous.”

Heavy stuff. There’s no new trailer to accompany the release, so I’ve chucked an old one below. Any of our American cousins played this?

What happened to games being about fun, fantasy stuff, to help distract us from the depressing day to day stuff?

@1 there have been games for ages which explored dark material. Silent Hill 2 is a great example, the original Shin Megami Tensei and Clock Tower were early 90s titles on the Super Famicom. One was about a nuclear holocaust in a vain effort to prevent a demonic apocalypse while the other borrowed heavily from an 80s Italian slasher film.

"Gut-Wrenchingly Familiar." Kotaku

I'll bet it does. Still looks better than that other game even though the distinct lack of actual game is noteworthy.

Yeah, i "played" it. Its hardly a game. More like a diary that you have to press X to read. I liked it, though. He says some interesting things.
I think it took me an hour and a half or so. Ssimple 100%.

It's dark, don't play it if you're actually suffering from depression.

Isn't nearly every indie game about depression or mental illness?

I played this all day and didn't get 1 trophy! Oh wait, that was reality, nevermind! But seriously, it looks interesting. ANYTHING on Vita is welcome at this point.
