The Ukraine-based Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games is opening a new studio in Malta, according to a post on the company’s official website.

The new studio in Malta will act as 4A Games’ new headquarters, with a number of key staff making the move, including chief technical officer Oles Shishkovstov and creative director Andrew “Prof” Prokhorov.

It’s a timely move. 4A Games is currently based in Ukraine, a country in the grip of revolution. Previous reports have also revealed the terrible circumstances in which the studio must work - enduring freezing cold conditions, frequent power cuts and corrupt customs officials stealing expensive hardware.

"By basing our new headquarters in Malta, a member state of the EU, 4A Games will be able to better compete on the international stage" said CEO Dean Sharpe. "Malta offers fantastic incentives for game development, and we are confident 4A Games will be able to attract the very best talent from Ukraine, Malta and beyond."

"This marks the start of a new chapter for 4A Games," added Prokhorov. "We are proud of our achievements as a young studio, and humbled by the response to our output so far. The team is looking forward to this new adventure.”

4A Games is currently working on Xbox One and PS4 remakes of both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. In addition to this the studio also says it’s working on "unannounced titles within the Metro universe as well as further, unannounced projects".

Good to hear they are moving, hopefully their family members are moving with them out of harms way.

Good for them. You don't want to be in Ukraine right now.

After hearing what they went through in the past I'd say it's about time. Last light was good, not without it's issues, something that's accepted as the norm these days. I'd like to see what they are capable of without the extra drama and baggage their Ukraine studio put on them, and I hope their families were able to make the move too, because that in itself could be a worse distraction.

Considering the hardship they endured while working on first 2 games, I would say they deserved to be singled out just because of that. There is many many other devs with working conditions that are 200x better and they can't even release a decent, let alone bug free game. Sure games weren't perfect, but I didn't mind little annoying bugs or even weird AI in the first one. Loved both of them and looking forward to another one!!
