Introduction:

The Sexy Brutale is a puzzle game set in fictional casino mansion The Sexy Brutale, in which players take control of elderly priest Lafcadio Boone. Waking up in the heart of the mansion, Lafcadio encounters the Bloody Girl, a creature who explains to Lafcadio that the casino staff have plans to murder each of the casino’s nine guests – plans which only he can thwart.

Gameplay takes place from an overhead perspective, with Lafcadio’s task aided by a Groundhog Day-style time-manipulation mechanic – the game’s events all take place within an endlessly-repeating 12-hour period (9 minutes in real time). All of the casino staff and guests are masked, as is Lafcadio himself… and as each guest is saved, Lafcadio will gain new abilities granted by the mask that the guest leaves behind. The powers of Lafcadio’s mask provide him with protection from the murderous intent of the casino staff, but also prevent him from interacting directly with any other character… so Lafcadio must instead observe the movements and actions of each character, working out how to save each of them while also discovering the dark secrets that the mansion itself has to hide.

When it comes to trophies, The Sexy Brutale has a fairly straightforward list, with most coming from natural progress through the game and gathering of collectibles. These collectibles come in two main forms – a full deck of 52 playing cards, plus 9 invitations to the mansion (one for each guest).

Overall, The Sexy Brutale gets a high recommendation from me, as a meticulously designed puzzle game, based around a well-implemented time-manipulation mechanic and with an intriguing, well-written background story.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play through the game’s story to completion, looking out for any collectibles along the way

The first thing to do in working towards the game’s trophies is simply to play through the game’s main story to completion, through the seven puzzle scenarios (portraits). As you do so, I’d encourage you to keep an eye out for any collectibles that you come across, but don’t be too concerned about these as they’re all readily obtainable later if missed initially. Do, however, keep track of which of the playing card collectibles you've found, as while the game will report your total, it won't tell you which ones you've found.

As with all puzzle games, you’ll get the most enjoyment and satisfaction from the game if you solve the game’s puzzles yourself, so I’d encourage you as far as possible to avoid referring to walkthroughs as you first play through the game – but if you do get stuck, the guide includes solutions to solving all of the game’s scenarios.

Trophies earned in this step:

  • The End of the Beginning
  • Sixpence None the Wiser
  • To Defeat the Spider's Curse…
  • The Devil and the Blue
  • Tequila, Down the Hatch
  • An Electric Performance!
  • A (Stylish) Sense of Dread
  • The Light Fantastic
  • Out of the Frying Pan…
  • The King in Red
  • …Into the Fire
  • The Tale of the Sexy Brutale
  • How Scenical! How Scenical!
  • Stories and Studies of Strange Things

Step 2: Collectibles and clean-up

After completing the game, you’ll be returned to the mansion, with the game world in a state to allow you to gather any remaining collectibles - see more detail in the trophy guide to help with locating these. There’s also one final trophy that doesn’t depend on story progression and for which the best payoff comes once you’ve collected all of the playing cards - which you may not yet have earned – so now’s the time to earn The Door of Old Habits… if you don’t already have it.

Trophies earned in this step:

  • A Full Deck
  • The Gang's All Here
  • Finding Forever
  • The Door of Old Habits…
  • Totale Brutale

[PST would like to thank Illusionary for this Roadmap]

Totale Brutale
You have unlocked every trick, secret and note that the mansion has to offer.

As usual, earn all other trophies to earn the game's platinum trophy automatically.

Secret Trophies

A Full Deck
You collected every card available within the mansion. Someone will be very pleased …

You’ll earn this trophy by collecting all 52 of the playing cards that are the game’s main collectible. I’d suggest for the best experience that during your initial play through of the game that you not use a guide, but do keep track of which of the cards you find (the game doesn’t provide a list of which you’ve collected, instead just showing your total); once you’ve completed the game’s main story, you can then go back and gather any that you’ve missed. At this point, you can refer to a guide for assistance if desired.

iBaddriveri has put together a video guide illustrating the location of all 52 cards (and all 9 invitations), which I’ve included below – as taken from the original thread posted here.

Alternatively, a text and still image based guide is available here.

The Gang's All Here
You possess every invite sent to every guest. It is a full — if macabre — collection.

The game's second form of collectible are the invitations sent to the casino's guests - there are 9 in total. They are more tricky to locate than most of the playing cards. I’d suggest for the best experience that during your initial play through of the game, you should avoid using a guide; once you’ve completed the game’s main story, you can then go back and gather any that you’ve missed, referring to a guide if necessary. You can tell which invitations you've found from the "brochure" page of the pause menu. Most commonly, you'll find the invitations on each guest's body after they've been killed.

iBaddriveri has put together a video guide illustrating the location of all 9 invitations (and all 52 cards), which I’ve included in A Full Deck – as taken from the original thread posted here.

The End of the Beginning
You saw everything the Bloody Girl has to show you. Time to get to work.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy following the initial tutorial sequence.

Sixpence None the Wiser
You saved Reginald Sixpence. The mansion clocks are yours to command.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the first murder, that of Reginald Sixpence.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • After 1.30pm, once Sixpence has opened the safe, collect the blank rifle cartridge that falls to the ground.
  • Place the blank into the rifle, before the butler comes to collect it.

If you prefer a video guide, iBaddriveri has put together a full video walkthrough which I’ve included below – as taken from the original thread posted here.

To Defeat the Spider's Curse…
You saved Trinity and Clay. The quietest of sounds are clear to you.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the second murder, that of Trinity Carrington and Clay Rockridge.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • South of the room where you’ll find Clay gambling, there's a note with CCTV camera codes – travel to this room and read the note for the codes.
  • Now that you know the codes, exit the CCTV room and travel north twice; in this room, turn on CCTV camera 3.
  • Return to the CCTV room and interact with the monitor, causing it to display the feed from camera 3 for Clay to see.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

The Devil and the Blue
You saved Willow Blue. You can see things that should remain unseen.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the third murder, that of Willow Blue.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • Observe Willow as she enters the painting room directly east of her guest room, which will be at around 2.20pm. You’ll see her entering a hidden door in this room, allowing you to use this door yourself.
  • Once Willow has committed suicide, collect the bone key that she leaves behind.
  • Go to Willow’s room and use the key to open her desk, collecting the hungry charm recipe. You’ll now see two “meal” locations marked on your map.
  • Reset time.
  • Go one room west from the clock in this area, collecting the hungry charm that’s been left on the floor of this room.
  • Take the charm to the two marked “meal” locations, interacting with the fish tank to “feed” the charm.
  • Enter the hidden door in the painting room, then use the now-sated charm on the skull to unlock the entrance here.
  • Go up the stairs and interact with the valve, holding on to it in its new position until Willow enters the room and attempts a ritual. The redirected water flow will extinguish the candle, stopping the ritual.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

Tequila, Down the Hatch
You saved Tequila Belle. Glass shatters at your word.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the fourth murder, that of Tequila Belle.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • From this area’s clock, travel one room west and collect the vinyl record from the gramophone.
  • Travel two rooms east, to the dressing room, then enter the storage room to the north. Here, place the record on the second gramophone that you’ll find here.
  • Observe the butler in the performance room to the north until he leaves to find the source of the music. Once he leaves, quickly enter and collect the storage room key from the piano.
  • Go back to the dressing room and interact with the storage room door to lock it, with the butler inside.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

An Electric Performance!
You saved Greyson and Redd. The locks of the mansion open for you.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the fifth murder, that of Greyson Grayson and Redd Rockridge.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • Observe Greyson and Redd as Greyson unlocks the safe in the room to the centre-east of the area. Once they leave, interact with the safe to collect the lighter.
  • The lighter is an item that you’ll now have permanently in your inventory, which can be used (in conjunction with Willow’s mask’s power) with the candles that you’ll find throughout the mansion to reveal wandering ghosts who come into the same room.
  • Return to the first room of this area and light the candle there.
  • Wait for a ghost to appear; talk with him to learn about a circuit-breaker hidden in the room to the north-east of the area.
  • Go to the north-east room and activate the circuit-breaker.
  • Go to the north-west room and observe Greyson and Redd until Redd leaves to the east.
  • At approximately 8.45pm, with Redd attempting to use the switch in the north-east room, interact with the switch in your room. You’ll need to be using the switch at the same time as Redd, so if your timing’s slightly off you may need to try this a couple of times before it works.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

A (Stylish) Sense of Dread
You have encountered a chilling figure in the heart of the mansion.

Story-related and unmissable. After preventing the murder of Tequila Belle, a short story sequence will take place; you’ll earn this trophy following the end of this sequence.

The Light Fantastic
You smashed a priceless chandelier with your voice. Vandalism!

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this is in the course of preventing the murder of Aurum and Thanos (the sixth portrait) - see Out of the Frying Pan… below for more details.

Out of the Frying Pan…
You saved Aurum and Thanos. The secrets of the mansion are yours to learn.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after preventing the sixth murder, that of Aurum Runes and Thanos Gorecki.

To prevent this murder, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • First, you’ll need to get yourself back to the main area of the mansion. Enter the theatre area and, within the cage, use Greyson’s mask’s power to unlock the trapdoor. Travel through the basement and you’ll find yourself back at the bar, via a secret entrance.
  • Now, some setup – you need to get into the Library area. In the rooms to the west of the ballroom, you’ll find a locked door to the north, which you can now unlock to reach the library. Entering here, you’ll earn the Stories and Studies of Strange Things trophy.
  • Go through the library’s rooms until you find a set of stairs to climb. Now, progress through the following hallway and re-enter the library, now on its balcony.
  • Here, you can use Tequlia’s masks power to shatter the chandelier, dropping a candle into the room below. This will also earn you the The Light Fantastic trophy.
  • Retrace your steps to the library’s ground floor, light the candle here and interact with the ghost who now appears. You’ll learn about a secret exit to the library.
  • At the back of the library, interact with the bookshelves to open the secret exit and leave the room.
  • Go south two rooms. In this room, exit through the door to the east – you’ll find that this takes you through a previously-unrevealed hidden passage, which will now be usable going forward.
  • Return through the secret passage and continue through these new rooms until you reach the grandfather clock. Wind it, synchronise your pocketwatch here and reset time.
  • Now, go one room north, two east and then again east through the northern door. Open the curtain and leave the room.
  • Next, go through the southern door (there’ll be a butler to avoid at some point around here) and interact with the mask to look through it into the room that you were just in. Watch as the butler hides a statue arm in the dumbwaiter, at about 2.15pm.
  • Return to the mansion’s main entrance, synchronise your pocketwatch here and reset time.
  • Now you’re ready to prevent the murders. The following steps will benefit from a brief introductory explanation – what you’re aiming to do here is to set the card suit displayed on each of four statues to show hearts. The first of these is in the mansion entrance, and should already be showing hearts.
  • Quickly travel to the bar. Here, remove the record, light the candle and leave the room.
  • Look back into the bar and watch as Aurum enters. Listening to the ghosts, you’ll learn the password that allows you to pass through the previously-locked door here.
  • Once Aurum leaves, talk with the ghost to gain entry to the following room and watch as Aurum passes through, pulling the statue’s lever. Once he leaves, enter the room and pull the lever yourself, until it shows as hearts.
  • You now need to go back to the south-western area of the mansion, where you saw the butler hiding the statue arm. Retrieve the arm from the dumbwaiter.
  • Travel to the room two south from here, replace the statue arm and interact with it again until it displays hearts.
  • Finally, travel back to that new secret passage that you discovered, pass through here and one room further east. You’ll find the final statue here.
  • Aurum will pull this statue’s lever once himself, so after he’s passed through this room (around 8.45pm), pull the lever yourself. Once it displays hearts, you’ll have solved this scenario.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

The King in Red
You encountered the deep Lord of the mansion. A prison in his own bloodied tears.

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this after completing the story sequence that follows saving Aurum and Thanos.

You’ll find yourself in the mansion’s basement. To complete this sequence, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • Go two rooms east, then one north. Wait until after 2.15pm, then check the dumbwaiter to collect the statue arm.
  • Go back to the south, then two rooms further to the east and one south. Using the statue arm, interact with the statue here and it will disappear. Enter the door behind it.
  • In this room, you’ll need to rearrange the flowers so that they match with the correct gravestone – the flowers will take root once correctly placed. The purple flower goes to the middle grave, light grey with the leftmost grave, gold with the rightmost grave and finally, red with the new gravestone that then appears.
  • Leave this room, go north twice and enter the north-western room from here.
  • In this room, you need to press the five buttons in the correct order. Start at the top-left, then the button directly below it, the one to the far right, then the bottom-left and finally the middle button, in front of the covered body.
  • Leave the room and enter the south-eastern room from here. Pick up the goblet, collect some water from the trough in this room and water the tree.
  • Reset time, return to the room that you were just in and water the tree again. Repeat this one further time – you’ll notice that the tree grows larger each time.
  • The large central door that you’ll have passed in front of a few times now should open. Enter here and after the story sequence plays out, you should earn this trophy.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

…Into the Fire
You have survived the burning mansion. For some reason, it feels hotter than ever.

Story-related and unmissable. As you progress through the game, you’ll find yourself in the mansion as it burns - you’ll earn this trophy after escaping.

To complete this sequence, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • After encountering the Lord of the mansion, follow the rooms around to the north until you locate a hidden passage and find yourself back at the bar.
  • Travel to the ballroom. Here, use Tequila’s mask’s power to shatter the window, opening an exit out to the mansion’s grounds. As you exit, you’ll earn the How Scenical! How Scenical! trophy.
  • Travel up to far end of the garden. Here, use the Sapphire Tear Ring on the door and enter.
  • You’ll find yourself back at the mansion entrance, but with the building set alight. There’s only one passage that you can take through here and you need to be quick – the only possible path will quickly become blocked with flames. If you find yourself with no way out, reset time. Be sure to synchronise your pocketwatch with the clocks that you come across.
  • Your goal here is to get to the ballroom and exit out to the mansion grounds again. Once here, walk back to the door that you used the Sapphire Tear Ring on and enter again.

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

Finding Forever
You spilled the deepest secrets at the heart of the Sexy Brutale.

After obtaining Eleanor’s mask, you’ll be able to use the mirrors scattered throughout the mansion to travel to and from the basement area. To earn this trophy, simply locate any one of these mirrors once you have the mask and interact with it. While you may not necessarily earn this while playing through the game's main story, gathering all 52 playing cards requires you to use the mirrors, so you'll earn this in the course of working towards the A Full Deck trophy, if not before.

The Tale of the Sexy Brutale
The pieces are in place. But the picture is still not complete…

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this trophy after solving the seventh and final scenario in the game, triggering the ending story sequence.

To complete this sequence, you’ll need to take the following steps (please be aware, these provide an explicit solution to the scenario):

  • Upon returning to the mansion, travel back to the scene of Aurum and Thanos’ death. Climb the stairs here and you’ll now be able to pass through the double doors here. Follow the path through the following rooms and up another flight of stairs to find yourself back in the Chapel area, where Sixpence was murdered.
  • You’ll now need to return to the specific room in which Sixpence was murdered – this can be either before or after the murder, but you’re unlikely to arrive here before the murder without resetting time.
  • Walk up to the window behind Sixpence’s body and interact with it using Tequila’s mask’s power to shatter the window. Exit the room through the gap that it leaves behind.
  • A story sequence will now play out, setting out the final death for you to prevent. Once you regain control, continue to watch until the victim leaves the room for the second time. Descend the ladder and interact with the bomb using your pocketwatch, synchronising with it.
  • Reset time.
  • Pick up the wire cutters in this room and interact with the bomb again using these.
  • ...and you’re done! Enjoy as some of the game’s final secrets are revealed!

If you prefer a video guide, please refer to the video in Sixpence None the Wiser.

How Scenical! How Scenical!
You discovered the mansion grounds. A beautiful, terrible sight.

Story-related and unmissable. The earliest that you can earn this is in the course of preventing the murder of Aurum and Thanos (the sixth portrait), but otherwise, you’ll earn this in the course of the sequence that leads to the …Into the Fire trophy.

After saving Greyson and Redd, you’ll need to return to the main area of the mansion. Now, in the ballroom, one north of the mansion’s entrance, use Tequila’s mask’s power to shatter the glass window, providing an exit out to the mansion’s grounds.

Stories and Studies of Strange Things
You discovered the library. What secrets does it hide?

Story-related and unmissable. You’ll earn this is in the course of preventing the murder of Aurum and Thanos (the sixth portrait) - see Out of the Frying Pan… for more details.

The Door of Old Habits…
You have unlocked the door to a deep, dark place. Some things never die.

In the ground floor room to the north with stairs to the first floor, you’ll find a key. Once you’ve collected this, return to the entrance room to the casino (one room to the east of the room that you start in after saving Sixpence) and take the door to the north. Here, use the key to unlock the door and you’ll earn this trophy.

If you come to this room after collecting all 52 playing cards, a different ending sequence will be available to you, so this trophy is best left until you’ve found all of the collectibles.
