Introduction

Takayuki (“Max”) had a pen-pal fifteen years ago, a girl named Aya Fumino. They didn't exchange many letters before she vanished. Max has all but forgotten about her, until one day he finds a letter from her he never opened, in which she confessed to having killed someone. Max travels to Aya's hometown of Matsue, Shimane to get to the bottom of the mystery of Aya's sudden disappearance – and the truth of her confessed crime.

Root Letter falls into the Phoenix Wright/Danganronpa area of visual novels, wherein a majority of time is actually spent going from location to location, investigating and gathering evidence to solve the game's mystery. It is also a very simple visual novel, as the endings are dictated entirely by your responses to Aya's letters, so feel free to choose any dialogue options you wish while talking to other characters.

There is a (mostly) spoiler-free walkthrough HERE if you want to use it, but the game holds your hand quite a bit, as using the “Think” command will more or less always tell you what you need to do next. The choice is yours. I recommend doing your first playthrough blind (but following the instructions in Step 1) and then using the walkthrough to speed up your subsequent playthroughs.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Play through the “Cursed Letter” route

Just play through the game. I'm fairly certain this is the default route, meaning any combination of replies will get you this ending. However, to ensure it (and to make sure you don't need to do a sixth playthrough), only pick the FIRST options whenever you reply to a letter. Just enjoy the story, and don't worry about trophies – they're all story-related in this run – but do try to make some progress towards Checking on Shimane. You don't need to grind it entirely, as you still have four more playthroughs, but this is definitely the playthrough where you will use the “Check” command the most.

Remember to watch through the credits for an epilogue scene. This is also where the endings data will actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Welcome to Shimane!
Ghostly Penpal
Dragonfly Stationery
Banana Stationery
Candy Stationery
Gal Stationery
Ginger Stationery
Gnome Stationery
Magatama Stationery
Crow Stationery
Skull Stationery

And likely:

Strolling Around Shimane

Step 2: Play through the “Princess of Himegamori Forest” route

You may have noticed after the post-credits scene that a few ending paths unlocked after you finished the Cursed Letter route. This means that more options have been added to your letter replies, and this entire trophy guide (in terms of referencing reply numbers) is based around you having unlocked the Cursed Letter ending first. During this playthrough, you will want to choose the SECOND option every time you reply to a letter.

While you have to start a new game and play through a bit of Chapter 1 – until you get to the Smartphone option – bringing up the Smartphone will allow you to entirely skip the rest of the chapter. You may safely do so for every subsequent chapter prior to Chapter 8 once you have replied to the letter. This does mean you will have to play through a bit of Chapter 3 every time, as it is the only chapter wherein the letter is not accessed during the first scene. Chapter 8 will always be the same, and while you cannot skip directly to Chapter 9, you can dialogue skip to make the playthrough shorter.

Remember to watch through the credits for an epilogue scene. This is also where the endings data will actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Mirror Stationery
Princess Stationery

Step 3: Play through the “A Government Plot” route

Start a new game. During this playthrough, you will want to choose the THIRD option every time you reply to a letter. The same rules from Step 2 apply here.

Remember to watch through the credits for an epilogue scene. This is also where the endings data will actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

UFO Stationery
Alien Stationery

Step 4: Play through the “Crossing Paths” route

Start a new game. During this playthrough, you will want to choose the FOURTH option every time you reply to a letter. The same rules apply here, but you will also want to go for another trophy, Found SHIMANEKKO!. See that trophy for more information.

When you reach Chapter 9 in this playthrough (“Rain Stationery”), make a separate save file. This will save you time just in case you missed your opportunity to get Found SHIMANEKKO!.

Remember to watch through the credits for an epilogue scene. This is also where the endings data will actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Rain Stationery
Airplane Stationery
The Truth Revealed?

And likely:

Found SHIMANEKKO!
Checking on Shimane

Step 5: Play through the “Bond of Marriage” route

This is your final playthrough. Start a new game, and make sure you only pick the FIFTH option whenever you reply to a letter.

Remember to watch through the credits for an epilogue scene. This is also where the endings data will actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Finding the Truth

And finally... √Letter! Congratulations!

[PST Would Like To Thank themindisacity For This Roadmap]

Got All Investigation Items
Acquired all items.

If you are gaining all endings (and you must), this will come naturally during your playthrough, as all investigation items are required to reach the endings. If you're following the Roadmap steps in order, this will unlock midway through Chapter 9 during your “Crossing Paths” playthrough. See Finding the Truth! for more information about the endings.

Checking on Shimane
Use the "Check" command 200+ times.

One of the options available to you is “Check,” which brings up a magnifying glass and allows you to search the environment you're in. If something is able to be checked, the magnifying glass will turn red. Check is often used to find investigation items and further dialogue options.

This is not likely to come naturally, though by the end of all your playthroughs you should be fairly close. While playing, just check things two or three times instead of the one time needed and you'll have this unlocked in no time.

Strolling Around Shimane
Use the "Check" command 100+ times.

See Checking on Shimane.

LetterMania
Select all letter replies. (1)

You will get this trophy naturally while going through all the endings. It will unlock in Chapter 7 during your fifth and final playthrough when you answer the letter.

Finding the Truth!
All routes completed.

There are five routes in the game, and unlike many visual novels, Root Letter doesn't lend itself to multiple save files to cut down on playthroughs. The endings are based solely on how you reply to Aya's letters during Chapters 1-7. As such, you're going to have to play through the entire game five times.

This isn't as bad as it sounds. After you've cleared the game once, start a new game and play through the introduction sequence (which can be text skipped) until you get to the letter. Once you have replied to it (see the list below) and have the Smartphone option available again, press , and you'll notice that the “Skip” option has been given to you. You can repeat this until Chapter 8. Thankfully, with the exception of Chapter 3, all of the letters are at the very beginning of the chapter, so you're looking at about 20-30 minutes of playtime to get onto the next ending path (including the replay of Chapter 8). For Chapter 3, you must first go to Kamiari-an, then to Marukoshi, and then the letter will be available to you. Chapter 8 can't be skipped, and unfortunately doesn't change, but can still be text skipped.

The routes are as follows:

Cursed Letter: Choose the FIRST option every time you reply to a letter.
Princess of Himegamori Forest: Choose the SECOND option every time you reply to a letter.
A Government Plot: Choose the THIRD option every time you reply to a letter.
Crossing Paths: Choose the FOURTH option every time you reply to a letter.
The Bond of Marriage: Choose the FIFTH option every time you reply to a letter.

The Truth Revealed?
Complete the Cursed Letter Route, Princess of Himegamori Forest Route, A Government Plot Route, and Crossing Paths Route.

Assuming you're following the Roadmap, this trophy will unlock after the credits and epilogue scene of your fourth playthrough. See Finding the Truth! for more information.

Found SHIMANEKKO!
Spot SHIMANEKKO 10+ times.

After you've cleared the game once, this sidequest will be available to you. It is one of the three sidequests required to unlock all the gallery entries, and the only one required for the .

It's best to do this during the “Crossing Paths” playthrough, as that seems to be the most consistent trigger of the event. Once you reach Chapter 8 of that playthrough, head to Kamiari-an immediately after leaving the inn. You will be greeted by a man looking for SHIMANEKKO. Check the sign outside Kamiari-an to get the quest started – you'll see SHIMANEKKO and he'll run away.

The steps you need to take, in order, are:

Kamiari-an: Check sign
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Vacant Lot: Check white house
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Matsue Station: Check road
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Kyomise Shopping Area: Check red mailbox
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Shiroyama Park: Tourist Information Center (not inside) – Check vending machine
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Matsue Oba High School: Field – Check field
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Shiroyama Park: Matsue Castle – Check path
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Usagi Theater Company: Inside – Check right window with mopeds
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
KARAKORO Studio: Check right desk
Shimane Art Museum: Go inside
Shiroyama Park: North Soumon Bridge – Check bridge

Alternately, during “Crossing Paths”, you can trigger this sidequest during Chapter 9 (“Rain Stationery”) after checking out the used bookstore.
